Freshman Apaches Sweep Home Tournament, Go 3–0 at Vic Salazar Gym

For the first time in several years, the Gonzales boys basketball program hosted a tournament and brought nine opposing freshmen teams in to play three games apiece on Saturday. The Apaches went 3-0 in the process and had a great showing while getting to showcase their talents in Vic Salazar Gymnasium as opposed to the auxiliary gym.

Opposing teams included Marion, Yoakum, Comal Davenport, New Braunfels Long Creek, Da Vinci Academy, Goliad, Cuero, Randolph and Stockdale.

Gonzales opened the day with a dominant 46-23 win over Cuero, where the Apaches held the Gobblers to eight or fewer points in all four quarters. Nick Villa and Brody Cardoza had 10 points apiece to lead the way, and Gonzales carried that momentum into their second game against the Stockdale JV.

The Apaches scored 59 points and rolled to a 59-40 win over the Stockdale JV, led by Villa with 17 points, Lekgega with 15 points and Cardoza with 14 points. The final game of the day was a back and forth contest against the Yoakum JV, and the Apaches needed an and-one conversion from Cardoza late in the fourth quarter to gain the lead and hold on for the win.

After falling to a talented Wimberley team on Tuesday, Gonzales is now 10-3 at the freshman level this season. The Apaches will open district play against San Antonio Kennedy on Friday at 5:00 pm in the auxiliary gym.
