Community school supply drive set for Aug. 7 at Edwards Center

Posted

Summer — the time of “no more teachers, no more books” — is almost over as schools gear up to start seeing students in the classroom as soon as next month.

To help them get ready, the Gonzales Community School Supply Drive & Giveaway will be held for grades pre-K through fifth from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Edwards Community Center at the corner of Kleine and Fly streets in Gonzales.

School supplies needed include composition books, crayons, notebook paper, map colors, pencils and folders.

Local businesses and community can get involved by “adopting a teacher,” and with the donation, a teacher will receive a $50 gift card to purchase school supplies for their classroom.

Last year’s effort gave away 300 school supply bags to students within the community through a collective effort from local businesses, organizations, churches and individuals.

Sponsors include Gonzales Main Street, Edwards Association, Eastside Baptist Church, First Methodist Church, Gonzales Church of Christ, Gateway Fellowship, Two Rivers Bible Church, Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, Divine Purpose Outreach Ministry, Gonzales Noon Lion’s Club, Leo’s Club, Pilot International Club of Gonzales, Anchor Club of Gonzales, GHS National Honor Society, GHS Career & Technical Education, NJROTC, Victoria College, Come and Take It Dance, Next Concept Motorsport, Person’s Flowers, St. James Inn, the Lynn Theater, Walmart and Rebel Heart Designs.

There are various drop off locations located at Walmart, Holly Jeanne Boutique Victoria College, Crew, Next Concept, and Person’s Flower Shop.
