Construction Begins on Long-Awaited New Gonzales Dog Adoptions Shelter

Gonzales Dog Adoptions has officially broken ground on its new shelter building, marking a major milestone for the volunteer-run organization after years of fundraising, planning and delays.

Construction crews began work last week, completing the forms and gravel foundation prep. Concrete is expected to be poured in the coming days, weather permitting.

Shelter Director Keiko McCormick said the project has been a long time coming.

“Even though we raised a bit over $100,000, it clearly wasn’t enough for constructors to build a building with 16 kennels in 2025,” McCormick said. “After negotiations, the construction company agreed to work with our budget, and finally, construction has started.”

The new building will provide the shelter’s dogs with a weather-proof, permanent facility, replacing the outdoor kennels the organization has relied on for years. McCormick said the project is expected to take a couple of months to complete.

While construction is underway, the shelter is continuing to raise funds to cover anticipated additional costs.

“We do need to keep raising funds toward this new building, as we expect all kinds of extra costs to come up,” McCormick said. “We’re so appreciative of the community’s ongoing support and donations.”

With winter approaching, McCormick noted that the shelter’s current dogs are still housed outdoors and will need extra care until the new building is ready.

“We have to make sure our dogs can make it through this winter in the outside kennels,” she said. “I’m seriously praying for a warm winter for their sake.”

The shelter is asking for donations of blankets (new or gently used) and dog treats, which are given more frequently during cold months.

Gonzales Dog Adoptions said they are excited to see progress finally taking shape.

“It’s been a long-awaited process with more steps than you could imagine, but it’s finally happening,” the shelter said in a statement. “Before long, our pups will have a brand-new, weather-proof, fancy shelter to call home.”
