COVID-19 vaccine clinic to be held in Nixon Thursday

Nixon residents will have a COVID-19 vaccine clinic in the Nixon Show Barn on Thursday, March 25.

An update regarding COVID-19 vaccination efforts in the county was given by Emergency Management Coordinator Jimmy Harless, who said the county was continuing to work at securing clinics to be held in the county seat, as well as Waelder and Nixon.

According to a Facebook post from the Gonzales Emergency Management Facebook page, a joint clinic in partnership with the county, the City of Nixon, and the Department of State Health Services will be offering a Johnson and Johnson vaccination clinic Thursday, March 25. “The clinic will be at the Nixon show barn at 1001 E Hwy 87 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” the post reads. “The Johnson and Johnson shot is a one-time vaccination.”

The link for registering for this event will be posted Tuesday, March 23, around 9 a.m. according to Emergency Management.

Gonzales County has also been awarded over $400,000 in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act grant money.

During the Monday, March 22 meeting of the Gonzales County Commissioners Court, County Treasurer Sheryl Barborak announced that the county had been awarded $400,356 in CARES Act grant funds. This represents a total of $500,445 in CARES Act funds awarded, counting those awarded in October 2020. Barborak said these funds would be added to the General Fund.

In other business:

• County Judge Patrick C. Davis approved a proclamation designating April as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month in Gonzales County, in partnership with Norma’s House.
• Monthly reports were received by the Commissioners from the County Auditor, Tax Assessor-Collector, and Treasurer, with an affidavit of fulfillment approved for the Treasurer.
• The Commissioners approved updates to the County Investment Policy and designation of Investment Officer. Nothing changed policy-wise, according to Barborak. These updates are just signatures from current commissioners.
• An upgraded postage meter lease for the District Clerk’s Office was approved.
• A voting machine rental contract between the City of Gonzales and the county was approved.
• The deputation of Margie Zapata for the Clerk’s Office was approved.
• A petition requesting the addition of approximately 748 feet to CR467 was received, and a posting of this request with 20 days’ notice was approved.
• Exceptions to county subdivision rules in Precinct 3 were granted.
• Donations of equipment from the Nixon Police Department to Gonzales County Constable Precinct 1 were approved.
• Langford Engineering was authorized by commissioners to identify and pursue grant opportunities which would benefit the county, as they appeared.
• Commissioners elected to allow employees to make changes to their deferred compensation plan through Nationwide, due to the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement (SECURE) Act. This will allow employees to withdraw up to $5,000 from their accounts for the purpose of adopting, as well as retiring early at 59.5 years of age if they choose to.
• The purchase of a laptop for Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Office was approved.
• The county approved renewal of its property insurance with Texas Association of Counties.
• A service agreement extension with Advanced Telecom was approved for the Sheriff’s Office in the amount of $1,350.
• A procurement request for a quote on the Smiley Radio Twoer from the HGAC Buyboard for the purchase of a radio tower was approved.
• The Commissioners approved 10 separate budget amendments, with each being related to funding for equipment or personnel.
• Bills to be paid by the county were approved.
