As I sure most of you know I am crazily committed to the preservation of our history and the arts in Gonzales. Today, I hope, as I write these words that commitment will shine a clear light on the diverse artistic efforts of Gonzales Crystal Theater and the many associations the Crystal has developed over the last decades.
The production this weekend of original ballet Down by the Guadalupe is the latest feather in the Crystal cap. That Crystal Theater cap, over the last 12 years, has illuminated Gonzales’ extraordinary history, showed blossoming talent, and introduced original script and song.
Down by the Guadalupe, created by Come & Take It Dance talented resident artist Gary Franco, was inspired by yet another artist, Vickie Frenzel. Vickie is best known for her work as a Texas historian, but her book “Gonzales: Hope, Heartbreak, and Heroes” resonates with the power and humanity that only art can create. Gary’s bold interpretation of the story of Gonzales from its founding, though its sacrifice, to its resilience and rebuilding will most certainly entertain. But these performances, will give one a new perspective on how the arts can tell a story … with or without words.
Down by the Gudalupe will give one a new understanding of the depth of talent unearthed in Gonzales every season. From tapping of the youngest dancers, to skill of emerging local talent, to the heart-stopping performances of Los Angeles artist on our stage, audiences will be enriched, truly enriched. The enrichment and the communal understanding that the arts bring into our everyday lives is the point of all. Isn’t it?
