A Gonzales man was killed Sunday, Jan. 12, when his SUV collided with a tractor-trailer on US-90A west of Gonzales.
According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report, a beige 1994 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Maximino Mayorga Lopez was on US 90-A at about 5:31 p.m. at a stop on the shoulder facing east when it attempted a U-turn to the left.
A white 2020 Peterbilt towing a 1995 trailer being driven by Modesto Davila Gonzalez was in the right lane on US-A 90 traveling east. He saw Mayorga Lopez making a U-turn so he steered to the left, crossing into the westbound lane and trying to avoid the Suburban. Unfortunately, his tractor-trailer’s front left struck the Suburban’s right side in the westbound lane.
Mayorga Lopez was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from his vehicle, which spun counterclockwise, leaving the roadway and rolling over on its top facing east in the north side ditch. Mayorga Lopez was trapped under the roof of his Suburban and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tractor-trailer left the roadway into the north side ditch and rolled onto the driver’s side. Davila Gonzalez was trapped in his vehicle and was later extracted with minor injuries.
The accident shut down 90A for an extended time and forced cars to be re-routed up nearby FM 2091 North and FM 2091 South.
