Gonzales, Seguin names two of 10 most breathtaking towns in Texas

A pair of towns just 36 miles apart — one the county seat of Gonzales County and one the county seat of Guadalupe County — have been recognized by World Atlas — a website which contains not only maps but informative stories about destinations worldwide — as two of the 10 most breathtaking towns in Texas.

“The big and beautiful state of Texas is full of breathtaking towns to choose from,” the website sid. “From art installations to huge cypress trees and a collection of Western romance film memorabilia, this list will lead tourists through the most breathtaking tour of Texas’s small towns. If you’re ready to walk through streets full of preserved houses from different eras, drink cups of local brew while listening to live music, and paddle through gorgeous swamps, then you’re ready for a road trip through the 28th state.”

Gonzales was noted for the proximity to Palmetto State Park, which was described as “a botanical wonderland” and “the soul of this charming town.”

“These grounds are alive with plants, wildlife, and rushing rivers and creeks,” World Atlas wrote. “The San Marcos River cuts through the park, offering a place to swim or kayak.”

Another site which attracted attention was the Gonzales Memorial Museum.

“The stone structure not only exhibits halls and sculptures, but also an amphitheater, which hosts public gatherings and entertaining productions,” the website wrote. “For a darker peek into the past, tour the Gonzales County Jail Museum to see historic jail cells and replica gallows.”

Seguin was noted for the Sebastapol House Historic Site, a restored 1856 Greek revival lime-crete mansion.

“The ultra-sturdy ‘lime-crete’ (a mixture of gravel and lime) construction was popular at the time, but it is now a rare sight. Tour this rare structure to discover the lost art that perfectly blends chemistry and construction,” World Atlas wrote.

Sadly, another attraction which was lauded by World Atlas recently announced its closure — ZDT’s Amusement Park, where “families and solo travelers alike can ride into an adrenaline rush.” However, the website did tell motorists to make sure they stop by to see the “World’s Largest Pecan” at the Guadalupe County Courthouse downtown.

Other towns which received recognition include Fredericksburg and Wimberley in the Hill Country; Marfa in West Texas; Jefferson in East Texas; and Clifton, Ennis and Waxahachie in North Texas.

“The small towns that comprise the vast state of Texas are full of unique character and rare beauty,” World Atlas wrote. “At the same time, there is so much beauty to be found in the landscape of the Lone Star State; even more beauty lies within the art of its locals, sprinkled throughout small towns in the form of gallery exhibits, murals, and “gingerbread” houses. The towns on this list may take your breath away, but they will also fill you with the wildest kind of wonder that can only be found in Texas.”
