The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs played a wild week of softball, picking up wins over Yorktown and Universal City Randolph while losing to Devine and Laredo United South.
On Tuesday, Feb. 25, the Lady Mustangs came from behind at home four separate times to force extra innings before dispatching the Yorktown Lady Wildcats, 22-21, in eight innings. Yorktown took a 4-0 lead in the first, but Nixon-Smiley scored six in their half of the frame to go ahead, 6-4.
The Lady Wildcats took a 7-6 lead after the top of the second, only to see the Lady Mustangs make it 8-7 in their own favor at the end of the second.
Nixon-Smiley had an 11-8 lead at the end of the third, but then allowed 10 runs by Yorktown in the fourth to fall behind, 18-11. The Lady Mustangs would then score six in the fourth and two in the fifth to go back ahead, 19-18.
Yorktown would score its final three runs in the top of the sixth to make it 21-19 and looked like they would escape with the win, but Nixon-Smiley tied it up in the bottom of the seventh and then won it in the bottom of the eighth.
At the Huber Ranch tournament, Nixon-Smiley beat Randolph, 5-4, on Thursday, Feb. 27, coming from behind in the bottom of the fifth with two runs before time expired. On Friday, Feb. 28, the Lady Mustangs only could manage two hits in a 13-0 loss to the Devine Arabians. Nixon-Smiley also lost on Friday to the United South Lady Panthers, 12-6, as they were unable to overcome a nine-run first inning by United South.
