Mary Gayle Morgan, 77, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, died on June 16, 2026, after a short illness.
Mary Gayle was the first child of Jean and Jasper Garland, born on September 22, 1948, in Waco, Texas. She graduated from Belton High School in 1966 and attended Southwest Texas State University where she met the love of her life, Jack Morgan, and they married on September 16, 1967, in San Marcos, Texas.
After marrying, the couple lived in Gonzales, then moved to Houston for a year, then back to Gonzales, where she worked in a doctor’s office as a receptionist. A few years later while living in Austin, she felt a calling to be a nurse and went to Austin Community College to earn her LVN license. In 1979, Jack’s father died suddenly, and the family moved to his mother and father’s home near Harwood. Mary Gayle worked at the hospital in Gonzales, and Jack renovated the family poultry farm. Mary Gayle worked several years as an LVN, many of them as a nurse in Dr. Williamson’s office. She went back to school and became an RN in 1990, working for one year as a school nurse at both Gonzales High School and East Avenue Elementary School. She was elected to the hospital board in 1992 and was the first director for Nurses in Touch Home Health Agency in Gonzales. In 1993, she worked for Gonzales Memorial Hospital Home Health Agency until 2010, when she and Jack moved to New Braunfels. Before retiring in 2017, Mary Gayle worked for the Gonzales Community Health Clinics as the Quality Control Supervisor for all the South Texas clinics.
Through all these years, Mary Gayle and Jack were also raising a family. Her first child, Lesli, was born April 11, 1971, in San Marcos, Texas, and her second child, Ray, was born January 15, 1977, in Austin, Texas. Mary Gayle loved her children deeply and enjoyed watching them grow up into adults and have their own children. “Mimi” adored her four grandchildren, helping care for them when they were babies, visiting them often as they grew up and attending many soccer and baseball games and school events. Her family brought her joy, and she loved being around them.
Mary Gayle was an avid reader from an early age. She loved talking about books, which gave her a deeper understanding of people. She was an exceptional caregiver, showing what it meant to be a compassionate nurse to those in need. In her later years, she enjoyed reading the Bible and spending time outside watching nature and praying.
Mary Gayle is survived by her loving husband, Jack Morgan; her children, Lesli Dabney and her husband David, and Ray Morgan and his wife Heather; her cherished grandchildren, Arden, Tess, Cora, and Charlie; and her two sisters, Jill Janecka and Kathy Jo Sparrow.
She was preceded in death by her parents Jean Smitham Brown and James Jasper Garland, and her brother, Davis Jasper Garland.
