Mustangs get first win of season, 14-1

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs ended a three-game losing streak with a big 14-1 win over the Bloomington Bobcats on Friday, Feb. 28, at home — their first victory of the season.

After spotting the Bobcats a first-inning run, the Mustangs scored two in the second, one in the third, eight in the fourth and three in the fifth to win the game by the run-rule. In addition to scoring 14 runs, the Mustangs managed eight hits and played error-free defense while holding Bloomington to just two hits and the one run.

Garet Gonzales went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, knocking in three runs and scoring twice, while Julian Amaya went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jaydin Munoz also scored two runs in the game.

The Mustangs stole eight bases, including three by Gonzales and two by Oscar Gamez.

On the mound, Amaya picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowing two hits, one earned run, walking nine and striking out 12. Federico Vasquez pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out two.
