Mustangs miss out on playoffs after Goliad, Stockdale losses

Nixon-Smiley saw their boys basketball playoff hopes slip away after a district finale loss by just two points to Goliad on Tuesday, Feb. 11, followed by a play-in game loss to rival Stockdale on Friday, Feb. 14.

The Mustangs had beaten Goliad by two points earlier in the season on the Tigers’ home court, but their guests returned the favor Tuesday as Goliad escaped with a 41-39 victory at Nixon-Smiley. The loss put  the Mustangs into a tie with Stockdale for the fourth and final playoff spot for District 26-3A and set up a winner-take-all play-in game in Goliad on Friday.

Unfortunately, Nixon-Smiley, which had split the season series with Stockdale, could not contain the Brahmas and found themselves on the losing end of a 53-35 ballgame that ended their season at 9-18 overall and 3-8 in district play.
