National Night Out in Nixon next Monday

The Nixon Police and Volunteer Fire Departments invite you to participate in the 2022 National Night Out Event, Monday, Oct. 3, from 5-9 p.m. at Nixon City Hall. This is the second year for the event, at the current location, and Nixon has hosted NNO several years prior to that, according to City Manager Harold Rice and Police Chief Mike Cantu.

The event is free to the community and offers music, food, prizes, all in partnership between the community and the Nixon Police, as well as the Nixon VFD.

According to the National Night Out website (nataw.org) this event is an “annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”

While most communities across the United States, including territories and military bases, celebrate National Night Out on the first Tuesday in August, Texas, along with a few other areas, elected to celebrate this community building event on the first Monday in October. Most likely because October is hot in Texas, but August is even hotter, for a community event outdoors. Many neighborhoods will host block parties, festivals, cookouts and an assortment of other community get- togethers, often with first responders demonstrating safety techniques and measures, as well as some seminars, or other events.

Nixon prides itself on an evening of community camaraderie and fun for everyone, of all ages and abilities, in an opportunity to join together and celebrate community, enhancing the idea that a community that looks out for each other is a safer community for all involved.
