The city of Nixon will receive more than $1.4 million in regional mitigation funds from the Texas General Land Office (GLO) to replace existing sanitary sewer trunk main and sewer lines, reconnect services and remove and replace manholes.

The money was part of a total of $30,889,864.23 from the Regional Mitigation Program announced by Land Commissioner Dr. Dawn Buckingham, with other funds going to Austin County, Brazoria County, Colorado County, Fort Bend County, Harris County, Matagorda County, the city of Portland, Victoria County, Wharton County and Wilson County.

"Texans know how to face challenges head-on, and the GLO is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with communities as we invest in stronger, safer infrastructure," said Commissioner Buckingham. "This funding will help harden critical systems, protect families, and support the future of our great state. We are cutting through red tape and taking decisive action so these projects can move forward and make a real difference in the lives of Texans."

The Texas General Land Office (GLO) allocated $1,166,997,000 in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the Regional Mitigation Program to reduce the risks and impacts of future natural disasters. Each Council of Government (COG) with HUD-designated eligible counties developed a method of distribution (MOD) for allocation of funds to units of local governments. Each COG developed their MOD through extensive public participation.

HUD defines mitigation as activities that increase resilience to disasters and reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of loss of life, injury, damage to and loss of property, and suffering and hardship, by lessening the impact of future disasters. HUD requires that at least 50% of total funds must be used for activities benefiting low-to moderate-income (LMI) individuals.
