Richard “Rick” Alvin Resch

Richard “Rick” Alvin Resch, 60, of Gonzales, Texas passed away on Monday, Feb. 15, 2021.  He was born on Aug. 8, 1960 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Harlan Ray and Mary Ann (Elliott) Resch.  He was a 1978 graduate of Tulia High School and went on to nursing school to obtain his LVN license in the state of Texas. As a new nurse in the region he worked within Muleshoe, Farwell, Tulia, Plainview and Lubbock regions. He also served as a volunteer Fireman in Farwell in the early 1980’s. Rick began his medical training working with the local EMS in Tulia at the age of 18 and then worked his way to becoming a Paramedic in the early 90’s in Chicago, Illinois. He married Cheryl Woods Oester on Feb. 14, 1991 in Dixon, Illinois, and they began their journey as a family together. When Rick decided to step away from the medical field, he become the owner/operator of R.A.C.E. trucking company in the mid 90’s. Where he drove long haul loads across the country. Rick, Cheryl, and their family moved to Hereford, Texas in the early 2000’s where he worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, as a correctional officer with the Clements and Neal units. In 2007 he graduated from Amarillo College with his Associates degree in Mortuary Science and continued to become a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in early 2008. He worked with Parkside Chapel Funeral Home in Hereford from 2006 to 2010, then he expanded his career to Levelland, where he began working for SCI Funeral Service at George Price Funeral Home until September of 2012 when he transferred to Gonzales, Texas. In Gonzales he was the location Manager and Funeral Director in Charge for Buffington Funeral Homes of Gonzales and Shriner.

Rick was a Master Mason for the Masonic Lodge #30 of Gonzales, was an avid bowler, and he was always part of a league no matter where he lived. He was such a practical joker; you never knew what his next move was going to be. Rick will be deeply missed by all that knew him. 

The survivors of  his practical jokes and witty sense of humor are his wife of 30 years; Cheryl Resch of Gonzales; son, Eric Oester and wife Ester Marie of Amarillo; daughter, Angelica Sustaita; one amazing grandson, Logan Ray Sustaita, both of Gonzales; mother, Mary Ann Resch Fowler and husband Roy of Dimmitt; two sisters, Debbie Wait of Dimmit, and Deana Grissom and husband Billy of Lubbock; three nephews, Bobby O’Neal and wife Andrea, Dave O’Neal and wife Chelsea, and Brandon Grissom; one favorite niece; Rebecca “Becky Ann” Grissom; brother-in-law, Butch Woods and wife Vicki of Mt. Carrol, Illinois; sister -in-law, Robin Woods Smith of Valparaiso, Indiana; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members and friends.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Harlan Ray Resch; grandparents, Ernest and Dean Elliott, and Richard and Marie Resch; brother-in-law, John Wait; and mother-in-law, Barbara Carpenter Woods.

Rick requested that there not be a “fuss” made over his passing so to honor his wishes, cremation services will be under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home of Gonzales, Texas.
