Spring is springing in Gonzales

Ola, Gonzales peeps! In checking my largely blank social calendar, I came to the realization that there are a bunch of things rapidly approaching on the calendar that probably are worth a reminder. Accordingly, here are some things of interest coming up in our fair part of the world.

The first thing on the agenda is today, April 5. At 4 p.m. at 1212 Church Street, the Gonzales Economic Development Corporation is promoting the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the BYK facility. This is a $50 million dollar effort between the public and private sector, and is quite a big deal for the economy of our town. The GEDC is encouraging residents to attend the ceremony and join in the celebration.

On Saturday, an entirely different event is taking place at Boomers Sports Bar. Between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, the official weigh-in of the 14th annual Catfish Tournament will take place. Hundreds of catfish will be weighed, and everyone loves seeing the giant yellows when they are weighed. It generates a lot of buzz for the participants and the people who watch, and everyone has a fantastic time. Plus, all the proceeds from the fishing tournament go to benefit the Alvis Malatek Scholarship Fund which donates two scholarships to a pair of Gonzales High School graduates every year.

Early on Saturday morning, the opening ceremony of the 2018 Gonzales Little League will take place at 9 a.m. at Independence Park. It is always a colorful ceremony, and it means a lot to the boys and girls who participate in Little League. Come on out and show your support.

The following weekend is a big one for Gonzales, and I just wanted to get it on your radar. It is the annual Community Garage Sale, and vendors and sellers from all over will be hawking their wares on the square and at private yard sales. If interested in participating, call Barbara Friedrich at Gonzales City Hall at 830-672-2815.
