The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs hosted their final home game Friday, Oct. 25 against the Stockdale Lady Brahmas.
The Lady Mustangs honored four of their players — Brooke Crisp, Hailee Houseton, Janaelyn White and Emily Granados — for senior night.
Lady Mustangs head volleyball coach Loraine Yates was proud to have these players on her team this season.
“I just appreciate them for all the hard work that they put in this season, and we're going to be sad to see them leave,” Yates said.
The Lady Mustangs closed out their final home match with a three-set loss to Stockdale (9-25, 8-25, 8-25), Yates is looking forward to next season and noted the things that her team needs to work on to improve.
“We just have a lot of raw kind of skills that we still need to kind of hone in a lot of our youngsters. They just didn't have a lot of varsity game experience coming into this season. But like I mentioned, I think with some work next year and building off the experience that they have this season, that we can really be a force to reckon with next season in a district,” Yates said.
Yates gave kudos to Stockdale and their team this season and she knows they’ll go far in the playoffs, she said.
“Leading into the last game, I know I've been really working with some of my underclassmen, a lot of the sophomores that are on the team, that are going to be with the program in the next few years, and, of course, trying to get tonight, since it was senior night, trying to get some of our seniors to play,” Yates said.
“But I wasn't entirely dissatisfied with the performance. There's definitely some things we need to work on, but I'm, I'm proud of the progress that our younger players have made throughout the season,” Yates added
The Lady Mustangs closed out their season against the fourth ranked Goliad Lady Tigers Tuesday, Oct. 29.
