US Congress candidate responds to Vela’s letter

Posted

Whether it is Marco Rubio’s comments on Trump’s little hands, or, more recently, Congressman Filemon Vela’s suggestion that Trump take his wall and put it behind him, what we, the People, are left with is a jaw-dropping scene unlike one we have ever seen before in our American experience. These comments feed our inner man’s insatiable desire for visceral, unsophisticated, and uninhibited expression. These desires, being what motivates secret inclinations for the juiciest gossip, or not just a mere defeat but a humiliating defeat of the powerful, are our own poison to either reject or imbibe.

There was a time when “Politician” like “Pediatrician” had a noble, respectable definition. A pediatrician is one who practices the art of pediatric medicine. A politician, likewise, should be someone who practices the art of policy making. Something has happened, though, to change the definition of “politician” to “corrupt, lowest-of-the-low, lying scum bag,” as a youngster recently put it so artfully. The recent comments by Mr. Vela are a prime example of the reason for our current definition.

If we are to return our country to a heightened state of respect in the world, we must begin with our leaders. If we, the People, are finally tired of a deplorable state of intellect among those who are elected to “represent” us, we must demand it. My neighbor told me just this morning, speaking of Vela’s comments, “You can expect that from me…I have no formal education. But these are supposed to be the educated, the models for our society.”

If Mr. Vela could read this, I would ask him that while his words did garner acclaim by some and broad dissemination in the news media, what did you trade for that moment in the glaring sun? Mudslinging always gets your hands dirty and leaves you with that much less ground to stand on. Who applauded your word choice? Only those who have decided to imbibe the pornography found at the bottom of a depraved heart. What did it gain for you? You revealed to your constituents that while you are fine with not showing up to work but 40% of the time, you will go out of your way, uncharacteristically I hope, to vulgarly attack a man running for the highest office in the land. It is not lost on me that he himself is very vulgar at times, but I never debate vulgarity with vulgarity. You also revealed to your constituents that you intend to defend your congressional seat in the upcoming election with more vigor than you defend the safety of our little girls in public restrooms and locker rooms. Last week you voted to approve an amendment to HR 5055 (amendment 47), in favor of allowing men into girls’ restrooms if they “identified” as a woman.

The People of the 34th Congressional District of Texas who were brought up to respect our elders, to respectfully disagree with our opponents, and to defend the safety of our most vulnerable, have had enough. If voting according to tradition means voting for depravity of soul, then we reject tradition. If voting for our friend or compadre means more of the same regression of common courtesy, we reject the compadre.

As a man of faith, a man of science, and now, a man interested in restoring an honorable definition to the word politician, I extend my hand down into the pit where our politicians seem to need to go to get noticed, and offer a way up. Mr. Vela and others may, yet, see the light.
