Nixon to enforce property upkeep

NIXON — City council met on Aug. 14 and voted to enforce property upkeep by homeowners who have allowed their properties to become littered with brush and debris. The policy involves the council notifying homeowners — who have moved away but keep property in Nixon — by certified letter that they have 10 days to contact the city. If they fail to do so the city will clean the property and bill the homeowner.

“Sometimes their weeds get really high, and that becomes a danger because snakes and varmints can get in there,” Mayor Gladyne Finch said. “And there are some places that are just trashy and they’ve let them go, but they need to get it cleaned up. We are notifying as many people as possible.”

The council also voted to use the city’s hotel/motel tax account to be used for community events. These taxes will be utilized by the Chamber of Commerce to go promote tourism and community celebrations.

“The chamber was wanting to know if they could use the funds for celebrations, like a new Nixon festival, and tourism events,” Finch said. “The money has just been sitting there, collecting, and it’s not that much, like around $5,000. We’d like to be able to use this money to be able to draw crowds to Nixon.”
