Stolen check used to purchase truck

GONZALES — What might have been a leisurely weekend trip to the coast ended up being a trip to jail after police said a man bought a pickup truck with a stolen check.

At 10:20 a.m. July 1, Officer Tyler Wendland was dispatched to West Motors in reference to a report of a stolen vehicle, Capt. Allen Taylor reported. Dispatch notified the officer that a man identified as Chase Carley had purchased a 2012 Ford F-250 pickup with a stolen check. On July 2, a warrant was issued for Carley’s arrest, and the truck was found that same day in Rockport, Taylor said.

Carley, 34, of Seguin, was pulled over in Rockport and arrested. He was taken to Gonzales County Jail and charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle — a state jail felony.

Taylor said additional charges of theft over $30,000 less than $50,000 and fraudulent use of identification against Carley are pending.

Freeport pair nabbed for ‘magic’ mushrooms, narcotics, weed and paraphernalia

At 10:17 p.m. July 9, Officer Leopoldo Mendez was traveling north on the HWY 183 bridge when he noticed a vehicle headed south driving 67 mph in a 55-mph speed zone. Pulling the car over, the officer identified the driver as Freddie Salazar, 25, of Freeport. A passenger in the car was identified as Abigail Peralta Gonzales, 28, also of Freeport. Officers said Salazar appeared nervous and asked him to exit the car, Taylor said.

A subsequent search of the car and its occupants led to the discovery of marijuana and a marijuana pipe with residue. Also found was a white powder believed to be cocaine, Adderall, hallucinogenic mushrooms, a scale for weighing drugs, rolling papers and a marijuana grinder, Taylor said.

Both were arrested and taken to Gonzales County Jail. Gonzales is charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, and Salazar with possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 2 over 4 grams less than 400 grams, possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 2 less than 1 gram, possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 less than 1 gram, possession of marijuana less than 2 ounces and possession of drug paraphernalia.
