This weekend, Come and Take It Dance will bring the powerful story of Gonzales to life through movement, music, and storytelling in their original production, “Down by the Guadalupe.” Performances will be held at the historic Crystal Theatre on Saturday, June 7 at noon and 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 8 at 2 p.m.
This sweeping production blends classical ballet with eclectic dance styles to celebrate 200 years of Gonzales history. From conflict and courage to rebirth and celebration, the performance honors the rich legacy of the city and its people.
Each performance will be introduced by local historian Vicki Frenzel, who will provide a brief historical context to deepen the audience’s understanding and connection to the events portrayed on stage.
Act I – The River Remembers opens with a serene portrayal of the Guadalupe River and the Native American tribes who first called the region home. As settlers arrive, tensions mount, culminating in sorrowful conflict. The iconic cannon gifted by Santa Anna becomes a rallying symbol, leading to the unforgettable defiance: “Come and Take It.” The act ends with the townspeople marching to the Alamo and ultimately burning their beloved city to prevent its capture.
Act II – Rebirth and Celebration begins with the return and rebuilding of Gonzales. What follows is a colorful celebration of heritage and hope, told through a dynamic mix of dance styles that embody the diverse spirit of Texas.
Guest artists Ariana Dewing and Brandon Forrest shine in the symbolic roles of Hope and Heroes, joined by a talented cast of local dancers.
