Gonzales County municipalities receive sales tax allocations for September

The biggest and smallest cities in Gonzales county (Gonzales and Smiley) saw sales tax allocation increases for September 2025 while the two cities in the middle (Nixon and Waelder) saw them drop from what they got one year before.

Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts $1.2 billion in local sales tax allocations for September, 5.3 percent more than in September 2024.

Combined sales tax allocations for the month of September 2025 for all four municipalities were $326,724.33, up $1,964.20, or 0.6 percent, from the $324,760.13 received in September 2024.

For the year, municipalities have gotten back $2,960,369.04, up $196,871.99, or 7.12 percent, above the $2,763,497.05 received through this point last year.

Texas imposes a 6.25 percent state sales and use tax on all retail sales, leases and rentals of most goods, as well as taxable services. Cities can charge up to 1.5 percent and counties can charge 0.5 percent for a total of 8.25 percent.

Gonzales saw a 3.26 percent increase, or $8,904.21, in sales tax allocations for September 2025 above the September 2024 allocation. The largest city in the county, which generates the lion’s share of sales tax revenue, received $281,786.96, compared to $272,881.79 last year. For the year, the city has received $2,518,685.30, up 7.84 percent or $183,321.89 more than the $2,335,363.41 Gonzales took in during through nine months of 2024.

Sales tax receipts were down comparatively for Nixon, which received $30,958.38, down $3,746.46, or 10.79 percent, from the $34,704.84 received in September 2024. For the year, the city has taken in $302,813.48, equal to 0.14 percent or $430 more than the $302,383.48 Nixon took in during the first nine months of 2024.

Smiley’s sales tax receipts were at $3,076.78, up $579.81 or 23.22 percent, above the $2,496.97 received in September 2024. For the year, the city has received $38,040.56, which is 33.66 percent or $9,581 more than the $28,459.56 received through this point last year.

Finally, Waelder received a total of $10,902.21, a decrease of $3,774.32 or 25.71 percent, less than the $14,676.53 received in September 2024. For the year, the city has taken in $100,829.70, which is 3.63 percent or $3,539.10 more than the $97,290.60 the city had taken in up to this point last year.

Three cities in Gonzales County — Gonzales, Nixon and Waelder — collect a 1.5 percent sales tax rate, while Smiley collects a 1 percent sales tax.

Gonzales County itself also receives a 0.5 percent sales and use tax and for the month of September 2025, the county received $187,812.83, which is 9.13 percent or $18,887.18 less than the $206,700.01 received in September 2024.

For the year, the county has received $2,229,808.06, which is 3.26 percent or $75,196.04 less than the $2,305,004.10 the county took in during the first nine months of 2024.
