The Gonzales Lady Apaches traveled to San Antonio for their final regular season match against the San Antonio Memorial Minutewomen Tuesday, Oct. 29.
The Lady Apaches battled the Minutewomen in three hard-fought sets; Gonzales secured the season sweep in those three sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-23).
Gonzales struggled in the last two sets, winning them each by four points or less.
Lady Apaches head volleyball coach Kim Payne said her team let their guard down in those final two sets and they have to play intense throughout entire matches in the future.
“We have been down in previous games like that, and they know how to fight back and rally back. And I do the drill in practice where we're behind and we've got to come back, so they know how to fight back,” Payne said.
Lady Apaches junior setter Aubrey Lindemann said the team had to encourage each other to play hard in the final two sets and not get mad in the process.
Lindemann is second in kills with 51 behind fellow junior Isabella Ikard, who leads the team with 87 kills.
For the second year in a row, the Lady Apaches swept the San Antonio schools to secure third place in District 28-4A.
Sophomore defensive specialist Shykayden Clack said it was really good to get third place in the district and that her team fought hard and pulled through to get the win over Memorial.
The Lady Apaches return to the playoffs for the third year in a row and will take on the Devine Lady Warhorses in the bi-district round Monday, Nov. 4 at Seguin High School.
“We’ve got two hard days, so we’re going to watch film tomorrow and we are going to prepare,” Payne said.
Devine finished second in District 27-4A with a 10-2 district record and a mark of 19-22 overall.
The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
