GONZALES — The Gonzales Lady Apaches delivered a defining performance Tuesday night, handing previously undefeated Schulenburg (4–0) its first loss of the season in a dominant 69–38 victory inside a packed Vic Salazar Gym.
Gonzales, now 3–4, seized control early and never let up. Crisp passing, a fast pace in transition and contributions from every player on the roster turned the matchup into the Lady Apaches’ most complete game of the year.
Head coach Alex Matanic said the breakthrough was no accident.
“We talk all the time about peaks and valleys. Basketball is a game of runs,” Matanic said. “Sometimes we’ve come out hot in the first half and then hit a valley in the third quarter. Tonight the girls finally put a full game together from start to finish. We stayed on the gas pedal, and it was a total team effort.”
Freshman Ellie Mae Lester helped drive the rhythm of the offense with one of her strongest distributing nights to date.
“I feel like I did good on my assists,” Lester said. “When I passed it, people made their shots, and that kept the game going. Everyone’s shots were on tonight.”
Even with some inconsistent foul calls, Lester said the group stayed collected.
“The refs were a little confusing at times, but we handled it well,” she said.
Junior Jordan Gonzales, who earned the postgame “Got That Dawg in Me” award, opened the scoring with the first three of the game.
“I hit the first three and just took it from there,” she said. “The energy in the huddle was intense and positive. We’re all working hard and doing what needs to be done.”
Jordan also praised the depth developing across the program.
“I think the JV team is coming along nicely,” she added. “They’ve been working hard too.”
Matanic emphasized how critical that across-the-board contribution has become.
“Everybody got in, and when they got in, they contributed,” he said. “That’s the Lady Apache basketball we’ve been striving for. When everyone does their part, nights like this happen.”
Tuesday’s win sends Gonzales into a demanding stretch of the season with momentum. The Lady Apaches now face a December packed with road games and high-level tournament play. This week’s tournament matchups include Jourdanton and Boerne Champion, both of which are consistently in the state-tournament conversation.
“We’ve got three quality tournaments this month,” Matanic said. “We’ll really see where we are as a team. I told the girls to enjoy this win, then come in tomorrow ready to stack the days and keep building.”
Gonzales will not return home until January, making Tuesday’s performance an important launching point for the road-heavy month ahead.
