The Gonzales Lady Apaches ended their regular season the best way possible — with a statement win that punched their ticket to the playoffs and sent their lone senior, Aubrey Lindemann, out on top.
After a challenging season filled with ups and downs, the pieces finally came together Friday night inside Vic Salazar Gym. With their postseason hopes on the line, Gonzales delivered a poised, energetic performance to defeat San Antonio Memorial in straight sets and lock in a playoff berth.
For Lindemann, the night carried a mix of joy and reflection. “It’s kind of hard to explain how I’m feeling,” she said. “I’ve been playing for so long, and it’s crazy that it’s coming to an end. But I really think we’ve prepared to be able to go on to playoffs, and I’m so, so excited. We came out and played so well — everything finally came together.”
Lindemann, who has made the playoffs every year since her freshman season, said she hopes to continue that tradition as she closes her high-school career. “This is such a special group of girls,” she said. “We’ve faced a lot of adversity this year, but I think playoffs mean a lot to all of us. I just hope we keep this momentum going into practice and work really hard because Floresville’s a tough team — but if we do that, I think we can definitely take the win.”
The match also marked a milestone for first-year head coach Jenna Lamb, who officially led her team to the postseason in her debut season at the helm.
“The feeling is great,” Lamb said. “It’s an accomplishment every coach wants but not every coach gets to experience. I’m blessed to have this as part of my journey.”
Lamb praised her players for growing into a more unified and resilient group. “The biggest difference Friday was that they made a very conscious effort to play as a team and execute situations we didn’t take advantage of the last time we played Memorial,” she said. “They’ve come a long way from August to now. That composure comes from facing adversity and learning how to move alongside it rather than push back.”
Heading into the postseason, Lamb said the focus is on “pursuing aggressively” and maintaining an 85% offensive tempo efficiency while learning to read Floresville’s defense.
“I’m very proud of this group and blessed to be their head coach,” she said. “It’s tough to bring your best every day, especially when adversity hits, but they’ve learned to push through and continue growing into the best athletes and young women they can be.”
The Lady Apaches will face Floresville in the bi-district round Thursday at 7 p.m. in Floresville, ready to carry their hard-earned momentum — and the heart of their only senior — into the playoffs.
