GONZALES — The Gonzales Lady Apaches volleyball team closed out their final full week of district play with a sweep of San Antonio Kennedy on Friday, Oct. 17, before falling to No. 2-ranked Navarro in three sets Tuesday night.
The victory over Kennedy gave Gonzales a boost in the District 28-4A standings, improving their record to 4-5 and keeping them in playoff position. The Lady Apaches carried that momentum into their match against Navarro, where they opened strong but struggled to maintain rhythm against one of the district’s top defensive teams.
Despite the loss, Gonzales remains in the hunt for a postseason berth heading into Friday’s Senior Night matchup against San Antonio Memorial. Head Coach Jenna Lamb said the focus this week is sharpening transition play and maintaining composure under pressure.
“Our main focus this week is transitioning quicker on and off the net,” Lamb said. “We started strong in the first set against Navarro but dropped off a little, so keeping that tempo and hitting the right spots will be key.”
Lamb said the Apaches’ prior meeting with Memorial helps set the tone for the rematch.
“The girls still have that sting from the first match,” she said. “They know what they need to do and see the goal in front of them. Playing at home will be an advantage, and I think they’re mentally ready to go out and execute.”
Friday’s game will also serve as Senior Night, recognizing the team’s lone senior, Aubrey. Lamb said Aubrey has demonstrated moments of leadership and mental toughness throughout the season, helping the younger players stay grounded during challenging stretches of district play.
Lamb, in her first season as head coach, said she’s proud of the team’s progress and chemistry as the regular season draws to a close.
“At the beginning of the season we struggled with adversity,” she said. “Now we handle pressure better and shake off mistakes faster. That growth gives me a lot of confidence heading into Friday and for what’s ahead next year.”
Gonzales will host San Antonio Memorial on Friday, Oct. 24, at Vic Salazar Gym, in a match that will determine whether the Lady Apaches advance to postseason play. First serve is set for 6 p.m., and fans are encouraged to attend and support the team as they honor their senior and fight to secure a playoff berth.
