NIXON — The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs came up just short on Tuesday night, falling 46–44 to Kenedy in a tight non-district contest that marked one of their closest finishes of the season. The loss moves the Lady Mustangs to 2–10 overall.
Nixon-Smiley kept the game within reach from start to finish, answering Kenedy’s scoring runs with strong defensive pressure and key plays from several contributors. The Lady Mustangs showed improved ball movement and rebounding, keeping the margin tight into the final minutes before the Lions held on for the two-point win.
Through the early season, the Lady Mustangs have leaned on several consistent performers. Ruby Mendez has been a steady scoring presence, while Gabriela Limon continues to lead the team on the glass. Grace Gomez has emerged as both a facilitator and defensive spark, pacing the team in assists and steals. Mariah Yanes remains a key interior defender, providing shot disruption and paint coverage.
The Lady Mustangs’ early schedule included a three-game tournament stretch from Nov. 20–22 and a non-district matchup on Nov. 24, all contributing to a demanding slate that has tested the team’s depth and endurance. Despite the tough start, Nixon-Smiley has continued to show incremental growth, particularly in defensive intensity and late-game execution.
The Lady Mustangs will look to build on Tuesday’s competitive performance as they prepare for the next week of non-district action and continue working toward a stronger rhythm heading into district play.
