NIXON — The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs squared off against the Fredericksburg Battlin' Billies on January 6 in Nixon and came away with a hard-fought 61–48 victory in a physical, back-and-forth contest.
The Mustangs received big scoring nights from Henry Benavidez, who led all scorers with 26 points, and Joe White, who added 13. The game featured stretches of heavy contact and momentum swings, with Nixon-Smiley facing foul trouble at times. However, key contributions from the bench and timely shots proved decisive as the Mustangs seized control down the stretch.
“I am very proud of the effort and growth this team is showing, but we are not complacent,” said Nixon-Smiley Head Coach Jordan VanAuken. “We are striving to get better every day and put our best foot forward. Our goal is to max out, and that means continuing to push for execution, effort, and excellence.”
The Mustangs also credited Fredericksburg’s coaching and toughness, noting that the Billies made them battle for every possession. Nixon-Smiley plans to review film and continue improving as they prepare for their next matchup.
The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Hallettsville Sacred Heart.
