Ottine Mineral Springs announces restoration, rebirth of wellness retreat

Ottine, Texas, (January 21, 2025) — Ottine Mineral Springs announces the historical transformation and redevelopment of the 40-acre site formerly known as Warm Springs. Inspired by the venue’s therapeutic origins, private investors are dedicated to renovating the landmark space and developing amenities that will position Ottine Mineral Springs as a premier destination for wellness seekers.

The resort is planning a soft opening to the community in early March, and more information will be forthcoming on how to reserve a spot.

“Ottine has long been revered as a sanctuary for healing and well-being,” says DeDe Gibson DeStefano, Ottine Mineral Springs General Manager and 1986 graduate of Gonzales High School. “Preserving the sanctity of our therapeutic waters and fostering wellness experiences remain at the forefront of our mission. Ottine is more than a destination; it’s a cherished part of our community’s heritage, devoted to renewal and rejuvenation.”

With profound respect for the mineral water and its benefits, Ottine Mineral Springs is constructing natural mineral pools that can be enjoyed year-round, incorporating saunas, hot and cold plunges and spa therapy services, all in the serene beauty of the natural landscape. Features, such as natural rock fountains, grottos, fire pits, hammocks and loungers enhance the immersive experience, while the landscape emphasizes native Texas flora, including indigenous plants and local grasses. Food and beverage options such as wood-fired pizza, salads, healthy bowls, and a variety of juices, coffee, wine, beer and cocktail options will also be offered.

Committed to preservation, Ottine Mineral Springs has retained the majority of the original structures, blending them with new elements to preserve their historic charm. After opening to the community in March, Ottine Mineral Springs will continue to build in phases that will include a full-service restaurant and bar, a steam room, extensive hydrotherapy experiences, additional private pools, a yoga room, and lodging. A larger spa will be built offering amenities such as facials and body wraps, along with massage therapy. Additional experiences will include outdoor activities such as hike and bike trails along the San Marcos River, outdoor yoga structures, and more.

“We are thrilled to share Ottine’s legendary waters with the community once again,” says DeStefano. “Our goal is to honor the original intent of healing and wellness that so many before us embraced. Their courage, perseverance and enduring care changed thousands of lives for the better, and we hope to uphold their legacy through the experiences we offer.” 

Dating back to 1909, Ottine's healing journey began with the discovery of the 105-degree artesian springs at a depth of 1,550 feet while drilling for oil. Following a period of dormancy, the springs gained prominence during the polio epidemic, when the newly established Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation raised funds for a hospital designed to treat those with polio, despite their race, religion or ability to pay. Throughout the years, the foundation continued to raise funds and open facilities as polio cases increased. After the invention of the Salk vaccine and the decline in polio cases, Warm Springs continued to serve as rehabilitation for those suffering from disabilities such as head and neck injuries and Multiple Sclerosis.

The water’s source, yielding mineral waters at a rate of 200,000 gallons per day, stands as a testament to Ottine's enduring heritage. The soft mineral waters originate from the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer and are considered the best of their kind in the country. Part of a rare class of alkaline waters found mostly in Texas, Ottine has been compared to the enriched waters of Karlovy Vary in eastern Europe.
