The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs went on the road Friday, Oct. 4 for a district game against the No. 3-ranked Poth Pirates.
The Mustangs rushed for a total of 162 yards rushing against Poth’s defense; sophomore running back Garet Gonzales rushed for 120 yards on 17 carries in the 39-0 loss to the Pirates; it was the first time in the three meetings since 2022 that Poth has allowed a Mustang running back to gain more than 100 yards.
On defense, the Mustangs readjusted in the second half and allowed only 10 points from Poth’s offense.
Aiden Flores, Davian Ramos and John Garza led the team with seven total tackles; Jaylun Rodriguez led the team with one sack and Garza led the team with seven quarterback hurries.
Nixon-Smiley will host Natalia in the battle of the Mustangs Friday, Oct. 11 at home; Natalia is 0-2 in district and 1-4 overall.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
