The Gonzales Apaches came out swinging in Friday night’s district matchup, controlling much of the first half before Salado rallied in the second to claim a 42–21 victory. The loss extended Gonzales’ losing streak to four games and now makes this week’s home finale against Jarrell a must-win for the Apaches to remain in playoff contention.
Gonzales opened the night with momentum and focus, forcing an interception on Salado’s second play from scrimmage to set up an early scoring drive. A few plays later, David Clark powered the ball into the end zone, putting the Apaches ahead 7–0 late in the first quarter.
The offense continued to find success in the second quarter as Ayden Ramirez connected with Damian Hunt for a long touchdown pass. Clark added another rushing score before halftime, and Gonzales carried a 21–13 lead into the break.
After halftime, the tide turned. A series of penalties, missed opportunities, and turnovers shifted the game’s momentum toward Salado, which scored four unanswered touchdowns in the final two quarters to seal the comeback.
Head coach Lyndon Hamilton said the Apaches executed well early but struggled to maintain their rhythm down the stretch.
“We started fast tonight but didn’t finish,” Hamilton said. “We talked about getting out of the blocks strong, and we did that. We had them on the ropes, but we didn’t finish the fight.”
Even in the loss, Hamilton said he was encouraged by the way his players responded to adversity.
“They never quit,” he said. “They didn’t unravel or fall apart. They kept fighting, and I saw leadership qualities in the second half that maybe we haven’t been seeing lately. I’m proud of our young guys and our seniors.”
Senior Wyatt Withers reflected on the team’s growth through the season and the bonds built along the way.
“We’ve really come together as a team this year,” Withers said. “We lost the first one, then went on a good streak and made a lot of great memories. Us seniors are all going to miss our younger boys, but it’s been a really good opportunity to be a Gonzales Apache.”
He added that one of his biggest takeaways has been learning how to lead by example.
“I’ve learned how to be a better role model and how to help others up,” Withers said. “If a freshman doesn’t know where to be, I’ll go tell him or help him off the ground. Just little things like that mean a lot.”
The Apaches now sit 2–3 in district and 5–4 overall, tied with Lago Vista for the fourth and final playoff spot. With Navarro’s season complete, Gonzales must defeat Jarrell this Friday to remain in postseason contention. Lago Vista faces district leader Wimberley, while Salado meets Smithville to close out district play.
Hamilton said his team is focused on finishing the regular season strong — and doing it at home.
“We’ve got one game left, and it’s at home,” he said. “Hopefully our community comes out to support us. We’ve learned how to start fast — now we’ve got to learn how to play four full quarters of football.”
The Apaches will host Jarrell at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Apache Stadium, with Senior Night recognitions taking place before kickoff as Gonzales looks to cap the regular season with a statement win and keep its playoff hopes alive.
