JFK splits season series with Apaches

The Gonzales Apaches hosted the San Antonio JFK Rockets for game two of the two-game series Tuesday, April 2.

The Apaches took game one, 8-5, in San Antonio, but San Antonio JFK split the series by beating Gonzales in Gonzales, 8-2.

Apaches head baseball Gary Beveridge said when his team came back from the Easter holiday a little sluggish and forgot the success they had built on.

“We kind of went back to square one. And we can't do that. We've got to, especially with this younger team we have we got to kind of build on our learning build on our success and we don't we don't have any room in the middle of district here to take any steps backwards,” Beveridge said.

The Apaches forced JFK to all seven innings, and Beveridge said his team won the last three innings, but they can’t “spot” a team with many runs early.

“So to be able to build on this we got to take those last couple innings in stride and keep working on that right direction,” Beveridge said.

The Apaches will host the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen Friday, April 5 to kick off their two-game series; and game two is in San Antonio Tuesday, April 9.

Beveridge and the Apaches know that this series will be biggest of the season.

“So Memorial has done a complete 180 from the team they were on. They've gotten so much better. And we know that and we know that they're going to be a real tough competition,” Beveridge said.

“But it's a game that we don't want to put more pressure on ourselves and what we need to do but it's games that we need to go out and win and we have the capabilities to do it. We're gonna have to do it as a team,” Beveridge added.

First pitch for both games are set for 7 p.m.
