Lady Mustangs win second straight

NIXON — Nixon-Smiley (2-1) hosted Luling (0-3), beating the Lady Eagles 54-41. After a first quarter outscoring Luling 10-3, the Lady Mustangs maintained their lead, outscoring the visitors 11-6 in the second, 12-10 in the third and then Luling cut the lead with a 22-21 fourth-quarter advantage, resulting in the 13-point decision.

Celeste Arriaga led the team in points with 34, shooting 10-of-25 from the field and 12-of-16 from free-throw range. Arriaga also had three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Lexi Trammell came away with 12 points, seven rebounds, one assist and four steals. Chaelee Mejia added three points and six rebounds to the stat book.

Nixon-Smiley is currently in a four-way tie for second early in the District 27-3A season with Hallettsville, Schulenburg and Yoakum. Up top is Marion at 3-0.

Nixon-Smiley takes a holiday break today but then travels to Gonzales for their annual Gonzales County rivalry matchup against the Lady Apaches on Tuesday, Dec. 27, with tipoff scheduled for noon. Their next district game is on Jan. 3 at Stockdale.
