Mustangs dismantle Karnes City in district opener

NIXON — Nixon-Smiley opened up their District 15-3AD2 campaign with a 34-0 win over Karnes City Friday night as they took on the Badgers at home. The offense combined for 289 yards rushing and 83 passing while allowing just 66 yards rushing and eight yards passing on defense in the win.

Quarterback Colby Newman went 5-for-12 for 69 yards passing and two touchdowns. Devin Hester caught a 15-yard touchdown while Jason Yell caught a 30-yard touchdown reception. Hester had a total of two receptions for 27 yards while Yell had two for 44 yards. Daniel Rodriguez also had a 12-yard grab.

On the ground, Newman led the team with 25 carries for 176 yards and a score. Yell ran 14 times for 72 yards and a score. Genaro Vasquez ran four times for 23 yards and Rodrigo Acevedo ran twice for 18 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Mustangs had three sacks, with Yell, Dylan Maldonado and Jonathan Carlos each registering one.

Maldonado had five solo tackles and eight assisted tackles while Carlos and six solo tackles and three assisted.

On special teams, Vasquez had a big 64-yard return.

Nixon-Smiley (3-3, 1-0) is home Friday night as they take on Natalia (2-4, 0-1), with kickoff set at 7:30 p.m.
