Mustangs fall at homecoming game

NIXON — The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs took their first district loss of the season, falling to the Natalia Mustangs 14-8.

Nixon-Smiley gave up a 75-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give Natalia a 7-0 lead. The home Mustangs answered back with a Jason Yell five-yard rush but the extra point was no good. Natalia added seven more points to go up 14-6. Late in the fourth quarter the Mustangs had a two-point safety to cut the lead to 14-8 but were unable to take advantage of the late extra possession, losing 14-8.

Colby Newman led the team in rushing, carrying the ball 23 times for 93 yards. He also threw the ball 13 times, completing just four for 76 yards and an interception. Devin Hester caught two balls for 37 yards. Ricky Flores had one for 29 and Daniel Rodriguez had one for 10 yards.

Jason Yell rushed the ball 11 times for 70 yards.

Dylan Maldonado was credited with the safety. He also led the team with 12 solo tackles and three assisted.
