Shiner St. Paul take regional title

HALLETTSVILLE — Several Shiner St. Paul track and field athletes punched their ticket to Waco as they claimed top-four finishes in multiple events, leading to an overall team victory by both the Shiner St. Paul boys’ and girls’ team at the TAPPS 2A South Regional meet on Saturday.

The Lady Cardinals dominated yet again, scoring 193 points to take first place with their total score of 193 points. Second place was Rosehill Christian with 90 points followed by Austin Hill Country Christian with 71 points.

Shiner St. Paul took first in five events and second in eight events, leading to the 103-point victory. At the race track, Natalie Jackson took first in the 800-meter race with her time of 2 minutes, 26.09 seconds. Lillie Bell placed fifth in the same race with her time of 2:32.69.

Meanwhile, Ashley Wachsmuth took silver in the 3200-meter race with her time of 13:45.51. She also took fifth in the 1600-meter with her time of 6:19.

In the 1600, Emma Morgan came home with second with her finish of 6:05.

Alexis Cantu qualified for state as she took fourth in the 200-meter dash. She clocked in at 27.77 seconds.

AT the hurdles, Grace Irvin and Riley Johnson took second and third as they were clocked in at 17.86 seconds and 18.75 seconds, respectively. At the 300-meter hurdles, Irvin and Johnson again took second and third while Tiffany Thomas took fourth with the trio clocking in at 51.89, 522.01 and 53.96 seconds, respectively.

At the relay races, the 4x100-meter team of Alexis Cantu, Irena Fikac, Emma Hull and Hope Kapavik won with their time of 52.332 seconds. The 4x200-meter team of Cantu, Hull, Irvin and Kapavik took second with their time of 2:11.43 while the 4x400-meter team of Johnson, Bell, Irvin and Jackson took second with their time of 4:17.18.

In field events, Parker Clay took gold in the discus toss, getting a distance of 126 feet, 11 inches. Ashlyn Patek took third with her toss of 104-6.

Clay also took second in the shot put with her toss of 37-4 ¼. Patek took third with her distance of 35-5. Christine Wagner didn’t qualify for state but took fifth with her distance of 32-2 ½.

At pole vault, Emma Morgan nabbed a gold medal with her jump of 7-6. Natalie Jackson took third with her jump of 6-6.

Grace Irvin snagged a top finish as she took first in the triple jump with her distance of 33-2 ¼. Delynn Pesek took fourth with her jump of 31-11 ½ while Alexis Cantu took sixth with her distance of 31-9 ¾.

Cantu also took fifth in the long jump with her distance of 14-5 ½.

At the high jump, Jordan Pawelek came away with second with her jump of 5 feet. Gracey Novosad took fifth as she was measured at 4-8.

The boys’ team also took first place, scoring 116 points at the meet. They bested Austin hill Country Christian who took second with 90 points and Rosehill Christian who took third with 83 points.

The Cardinals had four first-place finishes and two second-place finishes at the meet.

At the race track, Austin Barton led the way with a first place finish at the 200-meter dash. He was timed at 23.03 seconds. Barton also took third in the 400-meter race as he was clocked in at 52.53 seconds.

In the long-distance races, Lane Jackson took fourth in the 1600-meter with his time of 4:57.58 and fourth in the 3200-meter with his time of 11:21.10.

Derek Kapavik took first in the 300-meter hurdles as he finished at 41.08 seconds and second in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 15.86 seconds.

The 4x400-meter team of Kapavik, Jed Janecek, T.J. Bell and Barton had the most success, getting first with their time of 3:35.19.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Janecek, Ryan Bell, Tre’Zelle Perry and TJ Bell took second with their time of 1:35.26. Meanwhile the 4x100-meter relay team of Janecek, Ryan Bell, Tre’Zelle Perry and T.J. Bell finished at 45.96 seconds, good for fourth.

During field events, Colton Machart took first in the shot put with his toss of 44-6. Barton took fourth with his distance of 40-4 ¾.

Machart also took third in the discus with his toss of 125-10.

At the pole vault event, Janecek placed third with his distance of 9-6.

Ryan Bell finished fourth in the triple jump with his distance of 40-2.

All top four competitors will travel to Waco this weekend for the 2016 TAPPS Championship Track and Field Meet from May 6-7.
