Waelder drops games in Mumford tournament

MUMFORD — Waelder, ranked fourth in Class 1A in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) going into this week, traveled to Mumford to take on the two-day Mumford Cotton Classic that began Wednesday, losing their first three games.

A&M Consolidated JV 49, Waelder 48

The Wildcats lost in overtime to A&M Consolidated JV 49-48. After going down 9-6 in the first, Waelder took the lead with a 16-7 advantage in the second quarter to go up 22-16 at the half. The Wildcats increased their lead, ending the third up 34-26 before A&M Consolidated JV team forced overtime with a 14-6 fourth quarter score. The JV team would outscore Waelder 9-8 to win the game 49-48.

Allen Academy 47, Waelder 40

Only down two by the end of the half, the Wildcats had a bad third quarter as the Bryan Allen Academy Rams outscored Waelder 14-4 to go up 12 points headed into the fourth. Waelder would have a 17-12 advantage in the final frame, ultimately losing 47-40. The Rams are ranked sixth in the TABC poll for TAPPS 2A boys.

Calvert 60, Waelder 48

A familiar foe, the Wildcats took on Calvert, ranked 12th in the TABC poll in Class 1A. This is the third year in a row where they played against each other and Waelder has yet to get a win over the Trojans, losing Thursday morning 60-48.

Calvert has now took down Waelder four straight times under head coach Brandon Howard’s tutelage. The Trojans won twice in the 2014-15 season, once being in the same Mumford tournament and another in the Region IV-1A final. They won again in the 2015-16 season, this time in the Region IV-1A semifinal.

Waelder 54, Normangee 38

The Wildcats finished out their tournament bid with a 54-38 win over the Normangee Panthers. After going up 15-13 in the first quarter, Waelder added to their lead with a 13-8 advantage to end the half up 28-21. Normangee cut the lead by one in the third quarter but the Wildcats overwhelmed the Panthers 17-7 in the fourth to win by 16.
