One man was injured when two tractor-trailers collided on Texas 119 near Czaja Bros Road in New Davy in DeWitt County at about 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.
A 2006 Kenwood truck hauling an empty 2014 tanker trailer was being driven southeast on Texas 119 by Jose Luna Chavez, 62, of Weslaco. Meanwhile, a 2013 Peterbuilt truck hauling a 2021 belly dump trailer was also being driven southeast on the same roadway by Francisco Torres, 71, of Rosenberg, but some distance behind the first vehicle, Texas DPS Sgt. Ruben San Miguel said.
There was heavy fog in the area and Chavez apparently attempted to make a U-turn on the roadway, but Torres did not see Chavez’ vehicle until it was too late to be able to avoid a collision. He struck the tanker trailer in the left side, causing both vehicles to go off the north side of the roadway.
While Chavez was uninjured in the accident, Torres was transported by helicopter to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he remains in serious but non-life-threatening condition, San Miguel said.
The roadway was shut down beginning from Farm-to-Market Road 108 to New Davy for most of the day Tuesday, Dec. 17 until the roadway could be cleared.
