A piece of Gonzales is going to San Antonio.

Unless you've been asleep for many years, it's hard not to know about the Gonzales Food Market. Sausage. Chicken. Brisket. And, oh those cheesy potatoes. They draw people from hundreds of miles around.

And now, the folks in San Antonio will be able to get a taste of what most of us know like the back of our hands. The smell. The atmosphere. Maybe most importantly, the service.

How ironic that more than 150 years ago, it was men in San Antonio who sent out a call for help and the only ones to respond were from Gonzales.

Now, it appears another call has been sent, though this one less intense. But we all must eat and the folks in San Antonio will now be able to take eating to the next level.

Gonzales Food Market is now in San Antonio. The new restaurant is located on the eastside at 2530 South W.W. White Road.

"It's a great location and there is a lot of traffic over there and there is plenty of parking," said manager Richard Lopez.

A second restaurant will no doubt be a huge success in the fast-growing city, but the small town amenities which have been learned and practiced in Gonzales will no doubt add a little bit of "country" to one of the 10 largest cities in America.

"It's a unique product that we have and we wanted to introduce it to San Antonio," said Lopez.

Over the last few months key employees have been trained in Gonzales, to ensure the menu is exactly the same.

"I don't want to change anything," said Lopez.

The restaurant headquarters will remain in Gonzales and be highlighted in the San Antonio store.

"We are showcasing Gonzales in the restaurant," said Lopez.

There are plans to decorate the second store with pictures and artwork from the Gonzales area and the Food Market family.

The story of Gonzales Food Market is certainly one of a very successful small business started from scratch. And it's one of family. Family is everywhere at Gonzales Food Market. It's what built it from the beginning and what keeps it strong to this day.

"We all work hard and we are all in it together," said Lopez.

Even the building itself is a story. It's a place the family bought because they wanted to start a new restaurant business. And they did. Fifty years later, that business has now become two, one in historic Gonzales and one in historic San Antonio, two places linked forever in history — and now in great food.
