Main Street names Discovery Antiques as business of the month

Discovery Architectural Antiques at 409 St Francis St. was named as Gonzales Main Street’s Business of the Month for May 2024.

Discovery was founded in 1997 by Suzanne Kittel, who brings in very unique and vintage doors to the Gonzales area.

“I have a little bit of everything, like stained glass — people come for the stained glass. I have antique hardware, furniture — a little bit of everything, including sinks. I sell antique sinks,” Kittel said.

Kittel said she always wanted to have an antique store and wanted an old house in Gonzales. She moved here from Austin with her husband and son.

“So one thing led to another and we came to Gonzales because Gonzales has a lot of old houses. At that time they had houses that needed to be fixed up — a lot of old houses.” Kittel said.

Kittel has many unique doors on display in her store, including a church door from Buffalo, New York.

“A lot of mine come from the Midwest. I grew up in Missouri. St. Louis was like the center of the country. I mean, it still is I guess. But that was a place where I knew people there and Chicago and you know there's good shopping all in the Midwest,” Kittel said.

Discovery has three total employees at its store, which is open from Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
