Shooting incident critically injures Gonzales man; alleged assailant arrested

An altercation in Gonzales on Thursday, July 18, led to a shooting which resulted in one man being hospitalized in critical condition and his alleged assailant being charged.

Lt. Jason Montoya of the Gonzales Police Department advised that at about 8:13 p.m. Thursday, GPD officers and Gonzales County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 1100 block of Norwood Street regarding a shooting. A caller advised that a male subject had been shot.

First responders arriving at the scene observed an adult male laying in the street outside a residence with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his neck. GPD Sgt. Alberto Carrera applied first aid to the victim as Gonzales County Emergency Medical Services was called to the residence.

The victim, later identified as Kenneth Donnell Erskin Sr., 51, of Gonzales, was transported by ambulance to Ascension Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle and is currently listed in critical condition.

Information relayed to officers at the scene led them to locate and arrest 63-year-old Edward Hunt of Gonzales, who is being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was transported to the Gonzales County Jail for booking and will later be magistrated.

The incident is still under investigation at this time. It has not been indicated yet what started the altercation between the two men.
