Come & Take It Bar & Grill and the De La Garza family will host a benefit for Gonzales Christian Assistance Ministries this Saturday, Oct. 28.

Come & Take It Bar & Grill is giving back to the community and asking people to bring non-perishable food items to GCAM before Thanksgiving.

Come & Take It Bar & Grill also will be inviting Chef Nedra Harris to cook food this weekend, said Britney De La Garza. De Le Garza added that her husband, Rene, was responsible for inviting Harris to cater the Gonzales ISD Casino Night earlier this year.

“We're having a five-course meal, so we decided to invite guests from Gonzales and also give back to the community for the dinner,” De La Garza said.

De La Garza hopes that the benefit will get people to give back to the community, especially given the history of the town.

“Looking at the history of Gonzales and how the first pioneers came to Gonzales, there was like a big community spirit of helping others … It was just helping your neighbor and helping the community,” De La Garza said.

The event will be held at St. James Bed and Breakfast at 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and the evening will conclude with live music at Come and Take It Bar and Grill at 8 p.m. with live music by Barditch Hippies.

Rene has been a volunteer for the community of Gonzales for the Lions Club, Gonzales Economic Development Corporation board, the city zoning board and has been a board member with Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Gonzales.

“I try to volunteer as much as I can give to the community as well, so it's not just this time. It's been an ongoing thing, but this is more special for me as we are trying to feed the people that are hungry who can’t afford food,” Rene said.
