Contestants compete to be No. 1 with a mullet

Prepare for business in front and a party in the back as the highly anticipated second annual Come and Take It Mullet Contest flexes its tresses in downtown Gonzales this Saturday, Oct. 7, at 5 p.m., sponsored by Gonzales Main Street.

Winners in four divisions (ages 0-5, 6-12, 13-18 and 19 and older) will compete for a coveted custom Come and Take It Mullet belt buckle and the right to be called a champion, while there will also be prizes awarded to the reserve champion in each age group. It’s not so much Come and Take It at this event as it is Come and Grow It and Show It.

The entry fee for this epic follicular fray is $20 per mullet. While pre-registration was extended to noon Thursday, Oct. 6, do not fret as it is only necessary for those who wished to be considered for the People’s Choice Award. You can still walk up and register between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Gonzales Main Street booth, located on the west sidewalk between the jail museum and the courthouse. Judging then begins promptly at 5 p.m. in front of the main stage. Contestants will individually walk in front of the stage for judging and then judges will tabulate their scores to determine the winners.

Fake hair, wigs, extensions and artificial hair are not kosher for this competition; mullets must be homegrown by the participants themselves. Showmanship is taken into account, so dress to impress, express and for success!
