The Order of the Eastern Star opened its statewide year in Gonzales on Friday, Sept. 13, as more than 250 members gathered at the JB Wells Expo Center for the Homecoming & Fraternal Visit. The event combined tradition, fellowship, and philanthropy, making Gonzales the launching point for an ambitious year of statewide outreach.
The gathering is the first of the year for Glenda Klemm of Navasota, Worthy Grand Matron and the highest-ranking officer in the state, and honoring Gary Drescher of Gonzales, Worthy Grand Patron. Together, Klemm and Drescher will travel across Texas in the coming year, visiting local chapters, offering guidance, and advancing the Order’s charitable work. The Gonzales Chapter No. 403 and Waller Chapter No. 1047 co-hosted the kickoff, which served as both a celebration of leadership and a rally for service.
Attendees arrived from every corner of Texas including Lubbock, Midland, Houston, New Boston, Greenville, Dallas, Del Rio, San Angelo, Rockport, and Sherman to participate in a banquet and meeting at the Expo Center. Many extended their visit to explore Gonzales, staying in area hotels and enjoying restaurants, boutiques, and antique shops. Their presence not only filled the Expo Center but also brought a welcome boost to the local economy while showcasing Gonzales’ signature hospitality.
The weekend also spotlighted three of the Order’s key charitable initiatives. Proceeds supported the Sea Turtle Rescue in South Padre Island, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship, as well as youth programs including the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and DeMolay International for young men, reflecting the Order’s emphasis on nurturing leadership and character in future generations.
The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest international organization that welcomes both men and women as members. Its mission is to make a positive difference in the world through charitable works, lasting friendships, and loving kindness to all mankind. Membership offers opportunities to devote time and talents to projects that benefit humanity, guided by lessons that are scriptural, purposes that are beneficent, and teachings that are moral.
Special appreciation went to the JB Wells Expo Center staff and event crew for their outstanding assistance and hospitality. Their support helped ensure a smooth, memorable experience for visiting members and played a key role in the success of the Homecoming & Fraternal Visit.
As the first stop on Klemm and Drescher’s statewide itinerary, Gonzales provided an ideal backdrop for the start of a year focused on service, fellowship, and community outreach by the Order of the Eastern Star.
