First responders from Gonzales County and surrounding counties rushed to an 18-wheeler fire Thursday, July 27 on Interstate 10 West near the westbound 642 mile marker.

The Gonzales Sheriff’s Office said on its official Facebook page they received multiple 911 calls about the blaze, which happened at about 3:33 p.m.

“Deputies and Texas Highway Patrol responded and found a semi-truck trailer on fire, which had started a large grass fire. The semi-truck was hauling crushed vehicles,” GCSO said on its Facebook page.

Multiple fire departments (Gonzales, Waelder, Ottine, Belmont, Flatonia and the Texas Forest Service) as well as Gonzales EMS rushed to the scene of the fire.

GCSO had assistance from Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and the Waelder Police Department to shut down all the westbound lane to I-10.

“Several Florida Highway Patrol troopers, who were on the way to the border, also stopped to assist with lane closures and escorted fire trucks through the congested traffic,” GCSO said.

No information about what caused the fire or if there were injuries at the scene was stated in the Facebook post.
