Gonzales Powerlift Teams compete in Kenedy

Gonzales powerlifting stood tall with some awesome performances Saturday, Jan. 18 in Kenedy, Texas. Team-wise, the Apaches were at the top of the mountain, taking first place in the standings while the Lady Apaches finished second.

The Apaches secured their team championship with individual first place finishes by Omar Borjon (308 weight class), Isaiah Balderas (275 weight class), Gary Lewis III (242 weight class), and Jesus Maldonado (114 weight class). Other medalists included Charles Haufler (2nd place, 308 weight class), Kevin Veliz (5th place, 242 weight class), Pedro Borjon (5th place, 165 weight class), and Martin Cantu (3rd place, 148 weight class). The Gonzales boys outlasted the Kenedy Lions by one point.

On the Lady Apaches side, there were also a lot of gold medals won, with Madison Sampleton, Alize Miller, Jazlin Juarez, and Mariah Mendoza winning their respective weight classes (220, 165, 242, & 105). Teigan Jefferson and Maritza Perez added to the medal count, winning second and third place, both in the 148 weight class.

Lady Apaches Head Coach Saul Hinojosa remarked, “It was a good day. It was great to see the girls challenging themselves. Some had to overcome a little bit of adversity early on, but we finished the day strong. We want to build off of this meet, and move forward into next week in (Geronimo) Navarro.”

Apache Head Coach Keith Cubit said, “We are so proud of each and everyone of our lifters this past weekend. Being our first meet of the year the boys came out and exceeded our expectations by Winning the First Place Trophy as a team. Not only that we took 10 lifters and 8 of the 10 were medalist in their weight class. As long as the team keeps putting in work good results will follow.”

Overall, it was a strong day for both Apaches and Lady Apaches powerlifting. They hope to keep that momentum going as they prepare for the seventh Annual Navarro Panther Invitational Powerlifting Meet Saturday, January 25th.
