It was another big meet day for Gonzales powerlifting this past Saturday at Geronimo Navarro. The Lady Apaches continued to lift strong as individuals and as a team, finishing as team runner-ups for the 2nd straight week while the Apaches brought some fresh faces for their first action of the season.
Madison Sampleton highlighted the day, winning her third gold medal of the season in the 220s, along with the best overall heavyweight lifter of the meet. Jazlin Juarez also stood at the top of her weight class, winning gold in the 242 pound weight class. Additionally, winning medals, and points, for the Lady Apaches were Alize Miller (2nd Place, 181s), MIdaya Cantu (2nd Place, 165s), Marilyn Ramirez (3rd Place, 165s), Teigan Jefferson (4th Place, 148s), and Maritza Perez (5th Place, 148s).
“It was a good meet with some good teams today. Despite the great amount of tough competition, we performed very well. I am proud of all the girls and I feel like they are starting to really see their hard work pay off. This meet is always tough but it seems to bring out the best in us” said Head Coach Saul Hinojosa. Apache Head Powerlifting Coach Cubit added, “It was a meet with many positive things happening. A lot of first time lifters who, not only surprised themselves, but surprised us coaches with the results and the weight they were able to move. It was an exciting experience for our young lifters”
Gary Lewis III and Charles Haufler were the high points for the Apache powerlifting team, winning 2nd and 4th places respectively. As a team, the Apache finished 10th in the team standings. As mentioned earlier, a lot of new faces competed in their first meet Saturday for Gonzales, and they will look to improve as the season progresses.
Both the Lady Apaches and Apaches will look to defend their territory this upcoming Thursday, January 30th, as they host the Roll Tribe Powerlifting Invitational at Vic Salazar Gym in Gonzales. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4PM.
Keith Cubit encourages all to attend, saying “If you haven’t been to a powerlifting meet before, Thursday will be a great day to experience something you won’t forget. We are asking Apache Nation to come out and support our Apaches and Lady Apaches powerlifters”.
