The Gonzales Lady Apaches closed out their final home game Tuesday, Jan. 28 with a, 47-38, win over the San Antonio JFK Lady Rockets.
The Lady Apaches began the game at slow start trailing, 7-2, against the Lady Rockets, but quickly turned everything around in the next three quarters.
“It's just kind of one of those things. It was senior night the kids were playing a lot on nerves. And plus, we always play on nerves. Anytime that we play home again, we normally wait for them to kind of tire themselves out a little bit, and then that's when they kind of settle down and able to play the game the way we like.” Lady Apaches head basketball coach Mark Belford said.
The Lady Apaches say goodbye to their three seniors Bella Aguero, Skcarlett Cerda and Kilee Schwausch for senior night and they really proud how much they accomplished with the program.
“It’s very important feel like us three as seniors have had a very big impact on what this team has done in the past two years and what it will continue to do. I think we've left our mark for sure.” Aguero said.
“It's good to know that I'm leaving with just leaving this with other people that I feel like that will lead very well and do very successful without us.” Schwausch said.
Cerda said she was side and excited at the same time to play her final home game as a member of the Lady Apaches basketball team.
Belford in his second years was proud to coach these three seniors and their impact on the team.
“Those three seniors the epitome of what our program has been, you know, just kids that have come in. They work hard, they give us everything they have. And you know, without those three, you know, the program wouldn't be where it's going. And so we're definitely thankful to have had them for the years that we had them here in this program.” Belford said.
The Lady Apaches clinched a playoff berth for the second year in a row and Belford said it’ll come down between Crystal City and Devine on who they’ll take on in the first round.
The Lady Apaches will close out the season against San Antonio Memorial Tuesday, Feb. 4.
The game tips off at 6:30 p.m.
