The Gonzales Lady Apaches closed out their final home game with a bang from their seniors in a 12-2 season sweep of the JFK Lady Rockets Tuesday, April 16 in five innings.

The Lady Apaches celebrated senior night for four seniors (Sydney McCray, Haley Cantu, Kelly Breitschopf and Dakota Schmidt).

All four seniors contributed on offense; McCray recorded two triples, two RBIs and three hits; Breitschopf earned an RBI sacrifice and a hit; Schmidt earned two runs and one hit; and Cantu recorded a hit and RBI.

Lady Apaches head softball coach Michelle Uribe was glad to have her four seniors play the entire game.

“They've been such a big part of this program for the last two years that I've been here. But even before I got here, I know they were a huge part of what's been going on here and I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to coach them and it's just they blessed my life,” Uribe said.

The seniors were glad to cap off their final home game with a win and clinch second in District 28-4A.

“That was our goal — to at least get second, so it feels really good to meet that goal,” McCray said.

“It feels great. It's a feeling definitely that we have never had before, of accomplishment,” Schmidt said.

“It feels good. We’d never finished second, so I'm glad we got to accomplish that goal this year,” Cantu said.

“It's super exciting. It's definitely different. All the years I've played, this is definitely the best year and it's super exciting to be able to do something great like this,” Breitschopf said.

The seniors had defensive moments. In the top of the first, Schmidt threw the ball from the outfield to McCray, the catcher, at home; and McCray tossed the ball back the pitcher Cantu to record an out from home in the top of the second.

The Lady Apaches finished last season in fourth place with a 4-6 district record, but under year two with Uribe, they finished district with a 7-3 mark.

“It feels amazing to know that these girls are playing to their potential and really getting the accolades that they deserve is really something special,” Uribe said.

The Lady Apaches will take on Wimberley in the bi-district round of the 4A UIL Softball playoffs.

Time, date and location will be announced at a later time.
