Lunetta DuBose Low

Lunetta DuBose Low, age 99, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, October 2, 2021. She was born to Oscar Columbus and Katie Lula Bowen DuBose on January 18, 1922 in Gonzales County. Lunetta participated in basketball, volleyball, pep squad, and homemaker’s club in school. She graduated from Waelder High School.

Lunetta married Claude “Gene” Low on September 20, 1940 in San Antonio, Texas. Gene enlisted in the army for World War II, and Lunetta followed him by car to his different training stations toting along first born daughter, Dorothy. From Fort Sam Houston in Texas to Fort Polk in Louisiana to Fort McCoy, in Wisconsin. It was there that second born and only son, Junus, was born. When the men went overseas, Lunetta made the arduous task of riding the train home. She made this journey with two children needing to be diapered and fed. While working in the garden on D-Day, she heard the announcement that the U.S. Army had stormed Omaha and other beaches of Normandy. Lunetta stated she knew Gene was there. She recalled, “I was picking peas in the garden, and I kept picking peas and crying. Picking peas and crying.”

When Gene returned home from the service, they joined his family for a little while before purchasing a property in the Saturn Community. There they raised chickens for retail. It was during these years that Lunetta gave birth to daughters Betty and Patricia. For a short time, Gene and Lunetta moved to Corpus Christi while Gene worked building construction. They returned to Saturn Community where youngest daughter Phyllis was born.

Lunetta started to work at Ridgecrest Nursing Home in 1965 for a year and a half as a nurses’ aide. Her bosses wanted her to attend Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) school because they felt she would make a good nurse. With their help and encouragement, she took on the task. It was a struggle for her and her family while she took classes, worked at hospital, training, and getting clinical experience. On September 1, 1967, she graduated. Lunetta was happy to pass state board of vocational nurses in October. She was one of the few LVN’s to be appointed Director of Nurses in the state due to her diligently strong work ethics. After serving as DON for years at Care Inn Nursing Home, Lunetta retired in 1988. Before she could get out the door from her retirement party, she had two part-time jobs, training coordinator and public relations for Care Inn Gonzales and customer service representative for Diversicare.

While residing in Saturn Community, Lunetta was a member of Waelder Baptist Church. After moving into the town of Gonzales, she became a member of Eastside Baptist Church. She was a very dedicated Christian and served as a devoted member of the Reaper’s Sunday School Class. She taught her family to love the Lord and lived by example loving others.

During her lifetime, she was president of the Saturn Cemetery Association. She participated in membership of the Saturn Home Demonstrators’ Club, Nurses of Texas Association, Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was awarded Nurse of the Year for Gonzales County and runner up for Nurse of the Year for Texas.

Everyone always remembered her as a very special lady with a smile on her face and a respectful caring person who was always ready to lend a hand. Lunetta’s family remembers her as a loving mother, a great cook, and a hard worker. She treasured her grandchildren greatly. Lunetta enjoyed opening her home to friends and family for many occasions including celebrations and holidays. She will be greatly missed.

Lunetta was preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Katie DuBose, her husband of fifty-one years Gene Low, her three sisters Lavern Owens, Lillian Tumlinson, and Dorothy Mercer, and two brothers Winston DuBose and Haskell DuBose. She was also preceded in death by her loving son Junus “Jack” Low, son-in-law Ted Polk, grandson Leslie Low, and great granddaughter Lauren Behrendt.

Lunetta is survived by four daughters Dorothy Polk of Granbury, Betty Vaughan of Gonzales, Patricia (Jay) Edmiston of Harwood, Phyllis Low of Smiley, and daughter-in-law Connie Low of St. Hedwig. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren Connie (Mike) Monts, Jerry Polk, Melissa Johnson, Brenda (Danette) Vaughan, Kimberly (Michael) Wiley, Rebecca Vaughan (fiancé Monica Chappell), Shane (Cielo) Behrendt, and Cassidie Nance (fiancé Sean Whitfield), 3 step grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, 4 step great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 6 from 5-7 p.m. The funeral will be at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home on Thursday, October 7 at 10 a.m. Pallbearers will be Jerry Polk, Shane Behrendt, Devon Johnson, Alexander Wiley, Billy Bob Low, and Ken DuBose.
