Molly Bernice Hermes O'Neal, 93, of Gonzales, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2026. She was born August 23, 1933, in DeWitt County, Texas, to Casper Hermes and Ella J. Light Hermes.
Molly was born and raised in Cuero, where she attended school until family circumstances required her to stay home to care for her father following a debilitating car accident. Despite this responsibility, Molly remained determined to further her education and worked to earn her GED. She also helped her family by handling the bookkeeping for their service station businesses, demonstrating the strong work ethic and dedication that would remain a part of her life.
Molly met A.C. O'Neal through family members at a football game, beginning a love story that would span 67 years of marriage before his passing. The two were married on January 26, 1952, in Westhoff, Texas, and built a life centered on family, hard work, and a willingness to help others in need.
Molly was a consummate homemaker who took great pride in caring for her home and family. She loved keeping house, preparing delicious meals, and canning produce from her husband's garden. Among the many things she will be remembered for, her chocolate pie will forever hold a special place in the hearts and memories of those who enjoyed it.
An independent woman, Molly spoke freely and honestly, always expressing herself with sincerity. She was resourceful and hardworking, taking in ironing to earn a little extra money. She had a special talent for her work, expertly pressing trousers, jeans, and the sleeves of blouses and shirts, making sure every seam was just right. Together, she and A.C. were always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, offering kindness and support whenever they could.
Above all, Molly cherished her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took great joy in those she loved. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was passionate about sharing it with her family. Molly was also someone who liked to stay busy and engaged. When she wasn't tending to her home or working on something that needed to be done, she could often be found enjoying a game of Bingo or Yahtzee.
Molly leaves behind a loving family who will treasure her memory, the lessons she shared, and the many ways she showed her love through everyday acts of care and devotion. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie White (James); son, Mark O'Neal; grandchildren, Kristen Reid (Jimmy), Barry White (Krissy), and Sarah O'Neal; great-grandchildren, Seth, Abigail, Danielle, and Mason; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, A.C. O'Neal; her parents, Casper Hermes and Ella J. Light Hermes; her sister, Reba Schroeder; and her brothers, James, Joseph, Barney, Ernie, and Elder Ray Hermes.
